Football: Arsenal boss Emery laments dropping points

Football: Arsenal boss Emery laments dropping points

LONDON • Unai Emery's patience snapped towards the end of Arsenal's 1-1 Premier League draw at Brighton on Wednesday.
Frustrated by his side's failure to capitalise on a positive start and then his own inability to influence the game, he kicked out at a water bottle, inadvertently sending it in the direction of a fan.
An apology was immediately offered, and then again at the final whistle.
"I said to them apologies because I kicked the bottle after a disappointing action for us in the last minutes," the Arsenal manager said. "It wasn't hard, but it touched one supporter for them. I said to them I'm sorry."
According to multiple British media reports yesterday, the Football Association is looking into the incident and Emery could face retrospective action.
The Gunners fell short in their bid to strengthen their top-four ambitions as they failed to keep a clean sheet for a ninth away game. They have won two of four league games and only once in their last four in all competitions, a frustrating sequence that started when their 22-match unbeaten run ended at Southampton on Dec 16.
The defensive lapses that contributed to that loss were again evident at the Amex Stadium, when Stephan Lichtsteiner's headed clearance from a long ball fell right into the path of Jurgen Locadia.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH
In the second half, we couldn't impose our game plan. We didn't make more clear chances to win the match.
UNAI EMERY, Arsenal manager, admitting his team were good for only half the match against a mid-table side.

The Brighton forward then took the ball past the on-rushing goalkeeper Bernd Leno before tapping home for his first goal of the season.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had earlier moved one clear at the top of the league's scoring chart with his 13th goal of the season for Arsenal, and Emery was left a little disappointed by the equaliser.
The Spaniard said: "The first half was key in the match. We started winning and had another two chances, but they equalised.
"In the second half, we couldn't impose our game plan. We didn't make more clear chances to win the match."
He made a half-time change, bringing on Alex Iwobi for Mesut Ozil, increasing the feeling that the German is on borrowed time at Arsenal, where he is their highest-paid player on £350,000 a week (S$608,300).
It was the midfielder's first away league start since the match against Crystal Palace on Oct 28, but he again failed to impress his boss, who revealed the substitution was "tactical".
The 47-year-old said: "It's the same every match. Sometimes, I change it tactically when I need something to change."
However, the switch failed to pay off as Iwobi looked just as lost.
Equally puzzling was Emery's second-half decision to remove Alexandre Lacazette, who had set up Aubameyang's opener. Midfielder Aaron Ramsey was introduced despite their pressing need to score.
Forward Lacazette reacted angrily by throwing his gloves to the floor and Arsenal's disjointed display after the break did little to vindicate the manager's decision.
But Emery also defended his change afterwards, insisting Ramsey "deserved to play and take the responsibility because he wants to help us".

Football: Uefa open probe into Neymar's foul-mouthed ref rant after Champions League exit

NYON, SWITZERLAND (AFP) - Uefa have opened disciplinary proceedings on Neymar after his foul-mouthed outburst about referees following Paris Saint-Germain's controversial Champions League exit to Manchester United last week, the governing body announced on Wednesday (March 13).
The injured Brazil forward launched into a diatribe on Instagram against the match officials shortly after the defeat.
He watched on incredulously from the sidelines at the Parc des Princes as United were awarded a stoppage-time penalty for a debatable handball via the video assistant referee (VAR) system.
Marcus Rashford crashed home the spot kick to give the Premier League side a last-gasp 3-1 win that saw them move into the quarter-finals on away goals.
"It's a disgrace. They get four guys who don't understand football to watch a slow motion replay in front of the TV ... Go f*** yourselves!" Neymar wrote in Portuguese on the social media website.
The 27-year-old was so reportedly enraged he had to be restrained by PSG staff to stop him entering their dressing room.
"A disciplinary investigation has been initiated ... in connection with the comments made on social media by the Paris Saint-Germain player Neymar following the above-mentioned match," Uefa said in a statement.
If found guilty Neymar risks punishment ranging from a fine to suspension.

WOLVERHAMPTON, England (REUTERS) - Wolverhampton Wanderers repeated their FA Cup defeat of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United as a Chris Smalling own goal gave them another 2-1 win in a pulsating Premier League game on Tuesday (April 2).
Despite the distraction of next week's Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona, United, who finished the game with 10 men after Ashley Young was sent off in the second half, came out strongly for Solskjaer's second game as permanent manager.
Romelu Lukaku missed an early point-blank header, before Scottish midfielder Scott McTominay swept a low 13th-minute shot from outside the box past Rui Patricio to make it 1-0.
Undaunted and fielding a strong team despite their own distraction of an FA Cup semi-final against Watford on Sunday, Wolves quickly settled on a cold night at Molineux and began creating chances of their own.
Portuguese striker Diogo Jota hit a deserved equaliser from close range in the 25th minute after a nervy-looking Fred had lost control and Raul Jimenez threaded the ball into the area.
United went down to 10 men in the 57th minute when right back Young was sent off for a second yellow card after a reckless hack on Jota.
That enabled Wolves to pour forward, and in the 77th minute they got the winner thanks to a Smalling own goal after a scramble near the line.
The result left Manchester United fifth in table on 61 points, level with fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur who have played a game fewer. Wolves are seventh on 47.

Football: Sigurdsson double helps Everton sink Cardiff

LONDON (REUTERS) - Gylfi Sigurdsson deepened Cardiff City's Premier League relegation fears with two well-taken goals in Everton's 3-0 victory in the Welsh capital on Tuesday (Feb 26).
Sigurdsson is now the leading Icelandic goalscorer in the Premier League, moving two clear of the 55 scored by former Chelsea player Eidur Gudjohnsen.
A first half low on quality was illuminated by one flowing move in the 41st minute which ended with Sigurdsson firing low into the corner after being picked out by Seamus Coleman.
Cardiff showed more tenacity in the second half but were deflated in the 65th minute when Sigurdsson lashed home his second of the night past Neil Etheridge.
A bad night for Neil Warnock's Cardiff got even worse when Dominic Calvert-Lewin got his name on the scoresheet in stoppage time to complete a comfortable Everton victory after three consecutive league defeats for Marco Silva's side.
Everton, who had been inactive since Feb 9, moved into ninth spot ahead of the weekend's Merseyside derby.
"It was an important three points," the Everton boss, who has found himself under pressure, said.
"After the second goal I saw our players playing with more freedom, with more confidence and in that moment you could see the kind of football we can play."
Cardiff have conceded eight goals at home in two games, having been thrashed 5-1 by Watford last Friday and remain one place and one point above the relegation zone.
They will drop into the bottom three, however, if Southampton beat Fulham at home on Wednesday.
"We are very disappointed with that but we have 10 games left and we cannot keep thinking about it," Cardiff winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing said.
"We have to move on and get our heads on Wolves now."

Football: West Ham's Michail Antonio scores winner as Spurs suffers first loss at new stadium

LONDON (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino admitted his Tottenham stars are suffering from fatigue after they lost for the first time at their new stadium as Michail Antonio fired West Ham to a surprise 1-0 victory on Saturday (April 27).
Pochettino's side had won all four matches at their new £1 billion (S$1.77 billion) Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
But Antonio's clinical second-half strike ended that run as the West Ham winger became the first visiting player to score in the plush arena.
Third-placed Tottenham's second defeat in their last three Premier League games put a dent in their bid to finish in the top four.
They hold a three-point lead over fourth-placed Chelsea and are four points ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal, with both teams in action on Sunday.
It was a frustrating warm-up for Tottenham's Champions League semi-final first leg against Ajax Amsterdam in north London on Tuesday.
Blaming Tottenham's hectic fixture list for their defeat, Pochettino said: "We cannot put away the circumstance. They arrived fresh and ready to compete, for us it is completely different.
"We were tired. We knew that it was going to be tough because it was a derby, but we have to move on.
"It was really tough today. We did not manage the ball properly. In the second half we conceded a lot of space for them to counter attack."
Conceding that Tottenham had hurt their hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League, Pochettino added: "It is a fight, it is a race, with two games to play. We knew that before."
Pochettino had insisted Tottenham's first European semi-final since the 1984 Uefa Cup was less significant than their top-four challenge.
But the Tottenham manager's team selection told a different story.
Defender Jan Vertonghen was absent with a reported injury as Pochettino made four changes, including resting Kieran Trippier, Victor Wanyama and Fernando Llorente.

Pochettino revealed this week that injured striker Harry Kane hopes to be fit for the Champions League final if Tottenham make it and the England captain was watching from the stands as his club's unbeaten start in the new stadium came to an end.
With Son Heung-min suspended for the Ajax first leg, Pochettino had no reason to rest the South Korea forward against the Hammers and he was swiftly into the action as he raced away for a shot that cleared the bar.
Son should have done better on that occasion and he fluffed his lines again with a low shot that was too close to Hammers keeper Lukasz Fabianski after Dele Alli's pass gave him a clear sight of goal.
A flowing Tottenham move unlocked the West Ham defence and Son's blocked effort dropped perfectly for Christian Eriksen, but the Dane smashed his close-range shot straight at Fabianski.
Tottenham found it tougher to maintain any momentum in the second half, with Son's unsuccessful penalty appeal, after being bundled over by Arthur Masuaku, made more in hope than expectation.
Manuel Pellegrini's team were growing in confidence and they ended Tottenham's unblemished record in their new arena in the 67th minute.
Marko Arnautovic chipped a superb pass towards Antonio and the winger controlled on his chest in the six-yard box before blasting a powerful finish past Hugo Lloris.
Celebrating with a bizarre bouncing motion, Antonio staged a joyous jig in front of the West Ham fans.
"The celebration is from a guy called Dan Rue on Instagram who does these crazy dance moves. I have been busting it out in the clubs and I thought I have to bring it on the pitch. I love to bring out a bit of personality out there," Antonio said of his eye-catching dance.
Tottenham looked drained in the closing stages, but they could have denied West Ham their first away win of 2019 when Vincent Janssen's stoppage-time header was cleared off the line by Fabian Balbuena.

No pats on backs for City after rout: Pep

No pats on backs for City after rout: Pep
LONDON • Pep Guardiola's relentless pursuit of excellence means the bar always has to be set higher at Manchester City than at other clubs.
Part of the reason why he is so hard on his players also has to do with the fact City have won most of their honours over the past decade unlike Liverpool, whose "trophy room is much bigger than ours".
Despite rounding off an "incredible week" by smashing Chelsea 6-0 on Sunday to return to the top of the Premier League on goal difference, the City boss revealed there were no pats on the backs in the dressing room, with the most competitive title race in recent years.
He told reporters: "We don't love each other too much, the players and the staff. We don't let them breathe, but it's the only way.
"Nobody can say anything bad about us because these guys work a lot. The more you win games, the more you have to work.
"We have to maintain the level. We are competing with Tottenham and Liverpool. They've made the best starts in their history... so for us to still be there means a lot.
Above: Manchester City's Sergio Aguero celebrating the third goal, his second, against Chelsea at the Etihad on Sunday. He later scored a third goal to equal Alan Shearer's league record of 11 hat-tricks as he became the club's all-time top scorer in the top flight with 160 goals in 229 appearances. PHOTO: REUTERS

"To score six against Chelsea and the way we played, we had so much attention. We did it, it's an incredible compliment to the players, they are outstanding."
Guardiola also defended Maurizio Sarri, his Chelsea counterpart and close personal friend, after the Blues suffered their biggest defeat in 28 years, fuelling the sack rumours.

'SUFFOCATE' FOR SUCCESS
We don't love each other too much, the players and the staff. We don't let them breathe, but it's the only way.
PEP GUARDIOLA, Manchester City manager, on the relentless pursuit of excellence required to keep fellow title contenders Liverpool and Tottenham at bay.

Urging patience and drawing parallels with his debut season at City, he added: "People don't understand how difficult the first year can be. My first season here was difficult. People think if you buy players, you can immediately come in and win, but you need time."
Chelsea were blown away by a double from Raheem Sterling and a Ilkay Gundogan strike, while Sergio Aguero equalled Alan Shearer's league record of 11 hat-tricks as he became the club's all-time top scorer in the top flight with 160 goals in 229 appearances.
But, as far as Guardiola is concerned, City can still reach another level or two. Having led Barcelona to three successive LaLiga titles and two Champions League trophies, the Spaniard issued a challenge to his side - to emulate the greatest team of the 2008-12 era.
He added: "We have won three titles since we are together, (but) in Barca, we won much more.
"That team won the Champions League, World Club Cups, six trophies in the first season.
"(But) the desire to want to do the best is incredible and similar. For us to get 100 points (in the league last season), break all records, (I must) continue to push them and push them."

Above: Raheem Sterling scoring his second of the night and City's sixth goal as the Blues suffered their biggest defeat in 28 years. PHOTO: REUTERS

And if City are to pull off an unprecedented quadruple this season - they remain the only English team capable of achieving the feat - Aguero will be key to their chances.
Having hailed his big-game mentality in the lead-up to the game, Guardiola later praised Aguero's "consistency", telling the BBC: "I have said many times, Sergio scores every single season a lot of goals.
"I admire these kind of players. Young players come, but some stay for a long time, that is fantastic."
Sterling agreed with his manager, claiming Aguero should be "cherished".
He told Sky Sports: "It was a terrific performance from the team - the manager set us up and got us ready for the game. Sergio is a player we depend on."
Asked how he felt about matching Shearer's mark, the Argentina striker, who prefers to do his talking on the pitch with unnerving accuracy, stayed true to fashion, insisting he had "to continue the same way".
AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, REUTERS, THE GUARDIAN

It was a City siege in the second half, though, with the team's passing much crisper and penetrative. David Silva had a penalty shout turned down after Burnley striker Ashley Barnes appeared to handle the midfielder's shot. Burnley center backs Ben Mee and James Tarkowski, sitting very deep, kept getting in the way of passes, crosses and shots.

Football: Southampton end Arsenal's 22-match unbeaten run

LONDON (REUTERS)- A late goal by substitute Charlie Austin gave relegation-threatened Southampton a thrilling 3-2 victory over Arsenal on Sunday (Dec 16) in new Austrian manager Ralph Hasenhuettl’s first home game.
It was the Londoners’ first defeat in 23 games and meant they lost ground on fourth-placed Chelsea, while Southampton moved out of the bottom three.
Danny Ings, back after injury, headed two fine goals in the first half from equally good crosses by Matt Targett and Nathan Redmond.  In between, Mkhitaryan drew Arsenal level with a header of his own and early in the second half he scored via a big deflection.
Yet in the 85th minute Austin, who had come on for the tiring Ings, headed in a cross by Shane Long.
A first win in 13 league games since Sept 1 sent Southampton above Burnley into 17th place while Arsenal, who had last lost to Chelsea in the Premier League in August, remained fifth in the table.
Unai Emery’s team had Laurent Koscielny starting in defence for the first time this season but they were uncertain at the back from the first to last minute against a side that at one stage this season went five league games without scoring.
Koscielny was at fault in failing to cut out Targett’s cross from the left and losing Ings, who scored his first headed goal for three years.

The visitors briefly looked more composed and drew level when Nacho Monreal cut back a cross for Mkhitaryan to head in, and a minute later Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was only denied by a late interception from Jan Bednarek.
Southampton went ahead again, however, before the interval. Redmond supplied the chance with a neat chip and once again Ings eluded his marker to score.
So Arsenal maintained their dismal record of never having been ahead at halftime in the Premier League this season.
As a consequence Emery made one of his regular halftime substitutions in sending on Alexandre Lacazette for wing back Hector Bellerin, and Aubameyang almost equalised within a minute.  Mkhitaryan’s second goal was fortunate in the extreme, his shot taking a big deflection off Jannik Vestergaard to leave goalkeeper Alex McCarthy helpless.
Long, replacing Redmond, had a goal rightly disallowed for offside but then picked out Austin with a cross that goalkeeper Bernd Leno failed to deal with.
“As a club we know the position we’ve put ourselves, and with the squad we’ve got it’s not good enough,” said Ings.  “But if we keep showing resilience and hard work we can turn it round. It shows we’re moving in the right direction already.”
Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi said his side had not concentrated sufficiently and not defended well enough as a team.
“We’re frustrated the unbeaten run is over,” he added.  “We had chances to win the game. But we should give ourselves some credit for going on the run.”

PARIS (AFP) - Neymar has paid a visit to Brazilian football legend Pele, who has been in hospital in Paris since April 3.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward posted a photo on his Instagram account on Monday (April 8) of himself alongside a smiling Pele in his hospital bed with the two holding hands.
A date for the 78-year-old's discharge has not been officially announced by the hospital which is based in the Paris suburbs.
The three-time World Cup winner was admitted to a hospital with a urinary tract infection last Wednesday, the day after appearing at a promotional event with France striker Kylian Mbappe.
Brazilian news website G1 reported that Pele had intended to come out of hospital on Saturday to return to Brazil but had been delayed by further tests and would stay under observation until he was 100 per cent.
The infection was not serious and was under control, according to members of Pele's entourage.
Pele's advisor told AFP on Sunday that he would spend one more night in hospital "as a precaution".

Football: Guardiola says City, Liverpool have set new Premier League standards

Football: Guardiola says City, Liverpool have set new Premier League standards

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola says Manchester City and Liverpool have raised the bar in what is required to win a Premier League title after a blockbuster campaign by both teams.
If both sides win their remaining three games, Liverpool would finish the campaign on 97 points - the third-highest tally in the Premier League era - and still fail to end their 29-year wait for an English top-flight title because City would have 98.
It is a far cry from the 1996-97 campaign when Manchester United won the championship with just 75 points.
That means, according to Guardiola, that future champions will need to be aiming towards the magical century, which City achieved last season, to be assured of lifting the trophy.
"The standards we created last year at Manchester City, people know that you have to be close to 100," he told reporters on Friday. "Before it was 90.
"This standard was last season, we helped Liverpool to achieve it this year and Liverpool helped us to keep going, so thanks to Liverpool we are competing.
"Liverpool know that to win you have to make a lot of points. That's what we communicate to anyone.
"Next season, Chelsea are getting better, Man United, Tottenham. At the end when you are 25 points above United, 22 points ahead of other ones, if they want to stay there you have to improve the standard. It was easier before, everyone can lose to anyone."

TREBLE CHANCE

The demanding City manager, still in the hunt to win a first-ever domestic treble in English football, is already challenging his players to maintain their standards next season.
And he invoked the names of some legendary stars from other sports to try and give them an example of how they must maintain their status at the top of the Premier League.
"You know when Usain Bolt makes 100m race - that's the standard and the others have to achieve it," he said.
"Like, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, that's the same. One hundred points in a season - if you want to compete you have to do that.
"I'd sign to maintain that level, I'd sign to do what we have done again in the Premier League, I don't expect more.
"To push each other, knowing the others are at the same level. Find out what we can do to win the game, after work harder, respect the opponents, improve on what we've done this season. That's the only way I know."
Guardiola, whose side travel to Burnley on Sunday, also explained his decision to leave England defender John Stones out of his squad entirely for the recent 2-0 victory at Manchester United.
Stones has struggled to maintain a regular place in Guardiola's high-flying team this season.
"It depends on the quality of the players and what I see in the training sessions, if they are happy, a bit more down," he said.
"There are many reasons but it's not the quality because I know them and I know that always they compete good."

Football Federation Australia hailed the move as "an outcome that delivers on the gender equity principle of 'same base pay for same base work'." "This means that players in the Westfield W-League and Hyundai A-League will receive the same minimum remuneration hourly rate," said FFA Head of Leagues Greg O'Rourke.

I do agree and have said so in many posts, the lack of control over the games is a major cause of our defensive problems. But even after that, individually the back line is not good enough. 1 vs 1, playing from the back, tracking runners, tackling the ball off the opp or generally dealing with technical players…etc All are glaring problems.
