Win or lose, incredible season: Pep Guardiola

LONDON • Manchester City are on the verge of a historic achievement.
Pep Guardiola knows it, the players know it and the club's fans know it ahead of today's FA Cup final against Watford.
Perhaps that is why the Premier League champions have arranged for their open-top bus parade to take place in Manchester on Monday, when the team are expected to celebrate an unprecedented domestic treble - a feat yet to be achieved by an English club.
At his pre-match press conference yesterday before they travel to Wembley, Guardiola admitted the opportunity "to win four titles in one season will be incredible".
He said: "It's the final, hopefully, we can celebrate not just the Premier League, League Cup and Community Shield, but also the FA Cup.
"If we win tomorrow, the season is extraordinary, if we don't, it's extraordinary.
"We could have lost the Premier League by a point and the effort would have been the same; for one decision, you can win the league or the FA Cup, or not win it. We have to judge on what we've done in the season."

 
 
 
In City's way of another entry in the record books stand Watford, who are into their first Cup final since 1984.
The Hornets have never won a major trophy in their 138-year history, and captain Troy Deeney, their longest-serving player, feels their run to Wembley means he has come full circle.
While the striker, who has been at Vicarage Road since 2010, conceded they were "massive underdogs", he told ESPN that "for me, it's no fear".
Deeney, who spent three months in jail out of a 10-month sentence in 2012 following a conviction for affray, is considered a folk hero at the club, helping them earn promotion to the top flight in 2015 and guiding them to 11th in the league this term.
He said: "I'm hugely proud of the achievement.
"Football isn't going to scare me or is playing against City because of everything I've been through."
The City boss also acknowledged "how difficult it was to play" Watford, although he warned Deeney and his teammates that despite having "won the most incredible Premier League ever, we're back to business to focus".
Guardiola added: "We handled them (Watford) really well, the set pieces, the offensive side. We've spoken about the players, hopefully, we can compete like the FA Cup deserves."
The Spaniard also refuted suggestions that his side's on-pitch success had been in any way undermined by Uefa referring City to an independent judicial chamber earlier in the week for alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, insisting that "we are innocent until proven guilty".
He said: "I know the people are waiting for it to be guilty, but that is where it is... I know exactly what happened, and what they did and I trust a lot."
Asked about the rumours of him replacing Massimiliano Allegri after Juventus announced the coach's departure yesterday, Guardiola claimed he "was not going anywhere".
And on speculation that Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann could move to the Etihad instead of the Nou Camp, he said: "We can't afford him."

PARIS (AFP) - Patrice Evra has hit back at accusations of homophobia after Paris Saint-Germain blasted the former France captain for calling the Ligue 1 club "a bunch of queers" in the aftermath of their Champions League exit to Manchester United.
Earlier, PSG condemned "Patrice Evra's homophobic insults aimed at us... on social media" after a bizarre spat in which Evra used the French word "pede", a derogatory term for homosexuals, to describe the Parisians.
Nonetheless, the 37-year-old claimed his comments had been twisted by the French media.
"I made a video, as a joke as a friend, and the French media, they take it because I used the word 'pede', so they translated as I am against the gay people," Evra said on Twitter.
"I am not homophobic. I love everybody. So if I offend someone or I hurt someone, I already apologised.
"You have to be free for whatever you want to do in life, I will never judge anyone. Only God can judge me."
Tensions began to mount between PSG and when Evra when the former United defender posted a video on Instagram, where he has 5.8 million followers, from PSG's Parc des Princes stadium celebrating the Premier League side's stunning 3-1 away win in the Champions League last 16.

A breathless second half saw chance after chance fall at either end, until Coman's 77th minute strike put Bayern out of reach.
The Frenchman found the top corner after elegantly bringing down a loose ball in the penalty area.
He later came off for departing veteran Franck Ribery, who was making his final appearance for Bayern alongside fellow winger Arjen Robben.
By that point it was already 3-0, as Lewandowski had broken free of the back line and lifted the ball over Gulacsi to secure victory five minutes from time.

ABU DHABI (AFP) – Hosts United Arab Emirates ended Kyrgyzstan’s fairytale with a controversial extra-time penalty to reach the Asian Cup quarter-finals on Monday (Jan 21) as holders Australia and Japan also advanced. 
A knee-wobbling, chest-thumping Mathew Ryan saved two spot kicks as the Socceroos beat Uzbekistan’s White Wolves in a shootout, while the Blue Samurai bundled out Saudi Arabia. 
Substitute Ahmed Khalil was UAE’s hero on an angst-ridden Abu Dhabi night as he converted another late penalty after a refereeing decision that could charitably be described as “soft”. 
“I don’t want to talk about the referee,” growled Kyrgyzstan coach Aleksandr Krestinin.  “We leave the tournament with a lot of regrets – we deserved more. It’s our first Asian Cup but I’m absolutely sure it won’t be our last and we will come back stronger.”
Kyrgyz substitute Tursunali Rustamov had stunned the Emirates when he snatched a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser at the end of a nail-biting contest that began so poorly for the former Soviet republic.  It took the home side just 14 minutes to break through as Khamis Esmaeel headed in an Ismail Matar corner. 
Plucky Kyrgyzstan refused to go down without a fight, however, and the White Falcons equalised midway through the first half when Mirlan Murzaev squeezed the ball in from a seemingly impossible angle. 
Kyrgyz captain Valery Kichin subsequently gave UAE a scare when his curling shot crashed against the crossbar.  But Ali Mabkhout volleyed the 2015 semi-finalists back in front with his third goal of the tournament after some horror defending from Mustafa Iusupov. 
That looked to have ended Kyrgyzstan’s brave resistance until Rustamov headed home in the dying seconds to force extra time.  But after Mabkhout had crumpled to the turf under minimal contact 11 minutes into the first additional period, the former runners-up were awarded a disputed late penalty for the second time in this tournament. 

Grobbelaar impression  

As he had in the curtain raiser against Bahrain, Khalil coolly drilled home the spot kick to give UAE a shot at avenging their semi-final defeat by Australia four years ago. 
There was still time for Baktyiar Duishobekov and Rustamov to hit the woodwork, but the Emiratis somehow clung on to give themselves a shot at avenging their semi-final defeat by Australia four years ago. 
“Yes we had another penalty but we created a lof of chances,” insisted UAE coach Alberto Zaccheroni, who steered Japan to the Asian Cup title in 2011.  “We didn’t kill the game off but we showed a positive response and strong character after their late equaliser.”
Meanwhile, Ryan saved Australia’s skin under a blood-red “wolf moon” in Al-Ain, doing his best Bruce Grobbelaar impression to distract Uzbekistan’s penalty takers after a bruising 0-0 draw. 
The Brighton goalkeeper denied Islom Tukhtakhujaev and Marat Bikmaev before Mathew Leckie smashed in the decisive kick in the shootout to send the Socceroos through. 
“This new team of ours showed great calmness under that pressure,” said Australia coach Graham Arnold.  “That’s why Maty is in the Premier League and that’s why he’s such a world-class goalkeeper.”
Elsewhere, four-time winners Japan scraped past Saudi Arabia 1-0 thanks to a first-half header from Takehiro Tomiyasu.  Japan’s win over the three-time champions in Sharjah came despite conceding 77 per cent possession in favour of the Gulf side.
  “Asian football is getting more competitive,” said Japan captain Maya Yoshida after the Blue Samurai moved on to face Vietnam.  “To become Asian champions would put us close to the world’s elite so we have to keep improving.”Â

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester City swept back to the top of the Premier League as Gabriel Jesus struck twice in the champions’ 3-1 win over Everton, while Christian Eriksen kept Tottenham in the title hunt in a last-gasp 1-0 victory against Burnley on Saturday (Dec 15).
Jesus hadn’t scored a Premier League goal since August, but the Brazilian striker ended that drought to put Everton to the sword at the Etihad Stadium.
The 21-year-old’s goals and a strike from Raheem Sterling put City two points ahead of second-placed Liverpool, but Jurgen Klopp’s team can regain top spot if they beat bitter rivals Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.
City coach Pep Guardiola, whose team had surrendered pole position with their loss at Chelsea last weekend, was pleased to see Jesus get back on track.
“It is so important for him, strikers need to score goals,” said Guardiola.
“What he has done today, he has done in other games but the difference is he has scored goals.
“He has done it in a fantastic way. It was so valuable, his performance.”
Jesus opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a cool finish from a tight angle after Leroy Sane’s pass opened up the Everton defence.
Guardiola’s side had to wait just five minutes after the break to make it 2-0, when patient build-up found Sane on the left and the German’s cross was met by a bullet header from Jesus.
Everton got back into the game in the 65th minute when Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header from a high-hanging Digne cross flicking off Fabian Delph and past the helpless Ederson.
But Sterling came off the bench to end the contest four minutes later when the City winger met Fernandinho’s cross with a firm header.
City were also cheered by the return of playmaker Kevin De Bruyne as a 75th minute substitute after a six-week lay-off with his second knee injury of the season.

LONDON • After the final whistle, the Arsenal players trudged around the pitch for the traditional lap of appreciation to mark their final home game of the season.
The smattering of fans who had stayed back at the Emirates to bear witness to this joyless formality did at least bid hearty farewells to the retiring Petr Cech, and Aaron Ramsey and Danny Welbeck, who are leaving on free transfers, with the former heading to Italian champions Juventus.
Earlier, Arsenal said goodbye to any realistic chance of finishing in the Premier League's top four this season after a 1-1 draw with Brighton on Sunday.
The Gunners could yet make it if things get freakish on the last day of the term this Sunday - they would have to win big away to Burnley and hope Tottenham lose heavily at home to Everton to make up an eight-goal difference.
However, manager Unai Emery has accepted that the only realistic route to next season's Champions League is by winning the Europa League, with his team one step away from reaching the final after a 3-1 semi-final first-leg victory over Valencia.
Calling on his players to lift themselves ahead of the reverse fixture in Spain on Thursday, Emery said: "Our first target was (to finish in the top four) in the Premier League so we are very, very disappointed.
"But we need to keep a strong focus for Thursday in Valencia, we can still do something important."

  1. PALACE'S AWAY STRENGTH
  The Premier League table makes for interesting reading when it is divided into home and away results, especially from Crystal Palace's point of view.
  Remarkably, only Huddersfield have picked up fewer points than Palace at home this season, with Roy Hodgson's side winning just four of their 18 Premier League matches at Selhurst Park.
