Underdogs have their day

LONDON • Try telling Padraig Amond, Shaquile Coulthirst or Callum Lang - an unlikely trio of footballing journeymen - that the FA Cup has lost its lustre.
Try persuading the fans of Newport County, Barnet and Oldham Athletic, who all rejoiced in classic giant-killing feats on Sunday, that the grand old competition has mislaid its power to amaze and delight.
The Cup will, once again, likely be won by one of the Premier League's big guns in May, but the traditional third-round weekend at the turn of the year offered a timely reminder of why it remains close to the heart of English fans.
After minor league Barnet had stunned four-time winners and Championship side Sheffield United 1-0 away with Coulthirst's penalty and fourth-tier Oldham beat Premier League side Fulham 2-1 with Lang's late header, the best was saved for last.
At Newport's rocking Rodney Parade, Amond's 85th-minute penalty sealed an unforgettable 2-1 win over 2016 English champions Leicester City.
The humble Welsh club, former Uefa Cup quarter-finalists, have endured a chequered history and went bust in 1989, only to reform and climb back slowly from the lowest ranks of minor-league football.
Two seasons ago, they seemed certain to slip out of fourth-tier League Two and back into obscurity.
But, under manager Michael Flynn, who took over with them 11 points adrift at the bottom, they have been transformed and now own a place in FA Cup folklore.
The club, 13th in League Two, came close last year when another Amond goal took them to within eight minutes of beating Tottenham before Harry Kane equalised and Spurs won the replay 2-0.
This time, Amond made sure Newport would not be denied as he tucked away a nerveless penalty, shortly after Leicester's Rachid Ghezzal's piledriver had cancelled out Jamille Matt's early opener.
Newport survived the anxious final minutes to record their first win over a top-flight club since beating Sheffield Wednesday in the third round in 1963-64.
"It's almost Roy of the Rovers stuff. It's the first time I've beaten a Premier League club as a manager so it's one I'll never forget," said Flynn, who joined his players for boxes of peri peri chicken delivered to the home dressing room.
"It's massive for the club to be in the fourth round again and to get some much-needed finances."
Darren Currie, handed the Barnet manager's job on a temporary basis last month, praised the fearlessness of his side after their shock win over Sheffield United, flying high in third place in the Championship.
It is the first time the National League side have reached the fourth round since 2008 and they were the lowest-ranked team in yesterday's draw.
"They've been brilliant. I was proud of them in the two previous games, but this takes it to a whole new level," Currie said of his team.
Oldham caretaker manager Pete Wild, who has been in charge for less than a fortnight since Frankie Bunn's exit, saw his side bridge a 59-place gap in the English league pyramid to upset Fulham.
"We're from a small town overshadowed by big neighbours and I'm so proud to give something back," he said.
Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri accused his players of lacking passion, saying: "We need the fire, the passion, the blood. We need everything if we want to be safe. That is the real problem."

Football: Home United engage youths in MacPherson through photography and sport

SINGAPORE - Singapore Premier League club Home United organised a photography exhibition at the MacPherson Community Club (CC) on Saturday (Dec 29), in what was a culmination of a community outreach programme aimed at youths living in MacPherson.
Called My World Through My Lens, the exhibition saw some 50 youths, who are part of the MacPherson Teen Network Club, proudly display photos they had taken during the school holidays.
They had undergone a photography workshop from Dec 14-16 conducted by professional photographer Lee Aik Soon, and were tasked to capture a series of impactful photographs from around the MacPherson area based on four themes: "People and things we value", "What we want to change", "What we want to show the world" and "Portraits".
The exhibition was attended by Ms Tin Pei Ling, Member of Parliament for MacPherson SMC, and Mr Chong Kee Hiong, an MP for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC and adviser to Home.
Said Home general manager Badri Ghent: "Home United sees this as an excellent opportunity to leverage on photography as a vehicle to drive interest back into the local football fraternity and the community at large.
"It is vital for us to engage youths in Singapore continually, and we acknowledge the strength of photos and social media as a marketing tool.
"We also want to give back to the MacPherson community and MacPherson CC, for their support of our youth academy at Mattar Road."

A spokesman for consumer electronics group Sony, which had backed the programme, said: "Empowering the next generation of photographers has always been a strong focus here in Singapore.
"Youth are the building blocks of every community, and we recognise the importance of giving them the necessary tools and skills for them to grow.
"We are excited to be part of this initiative as it not only exposes youths to a new skill but also gives them a creative platform to showcase their stories and boost the country's photography scene."
Home yesterday also launched the MacPherson Protectors programme for 2019, which aims to engage youths living in MacPherson to attend football training sessions at the Home United Youth Academy (HYFA) at Mattar Road up to twice a week, as a way to ensure they spend their time and energy after school in a productive manner.

For the first time, MyFootballCamp is coming to Singapore, and an amazing youth football training camp will be held at Home United Youth Football Academy (HYFA) at Mattar Road in term 20 November - 24 November2017!

'He's a super-hero': Tearful Pochettino salutes hat-trick hero Lucas

'He's a super-hero': Tearful Pochettino salutes hat-trick hero Lucas

AMSTERDAM (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino wept tears of joy as the emotional Tottenham manager hailed "super-hero" Lucas Moura for the incredible hat-trick that fired Tottenham into their first Champions League final.
Tottenham enjoyed arguably the greatest night in their history as Lucas's second-half treble clinched a 3-2 semi-final second-leg win that sent Pochettino's side through on away goals.
With just seconds left at the Johan Cruyff Arena, Tottenham were heading out of the tournament, but Brazilian forward Lucas came to the rescue with a superb strike from the edge of the area.
It was all too much for Pochettino, who danced with delight before burying his head in the turf as he let his emotions run wild.
When the final whistle went, Pochettino sobbed uncontrollably and he was still misty-eyed when he spoke to the media.
"It's still difficult to talk. The emotion is amazing, thank you to football. My players are heroes - in the last year I was telling everyone this group are heroes," Pochettino told BT Sport.
"They are all heroes but Lucas was a super-hero. Unbelievable hat-trick. He deserves it, he is a great guy.

"The second half they were amazing. Thank you football! This type of emotion without football is not possible."
Tottenham were written off in some quarters before the match after losing the first leg at home 1-0, a match that Ajax dominated for long periods.
And Pochettino took a subtle swipe at the doubters when he said: "Thank you to everyone who has believed in us. To describe this in words is difficult.
"We were talking before the game that when you work and when you feel the love it's not stress, it's passion of the team.
"We showed we love the sport and football. Today was amazing. It was a joy to watch this kind of game.
"It's difficult to compete at this level. I am so grateful to be a coach. To be in football and to live this type of football."
Welling up with emotion, Pochettino was crying again towards the end of the interview as he dedicated the astonishing triumph to his family.
"To have the chance to play a final is amazing. I want to remember my family, it is for them too. For the people who support us in that moment, it is amazing to reward them," he said as the tears flowed once more.
"I think everyone deserves it in this club, with all the tough times we've had in the five years that we have been here."

Portland blaze Denver to make bow in series
DENVER • Portland coach Terry Stotts paid tribute to the team's video coordinator, Jonathan Yim, who was seriously injured in a car crash with his family last week, after the Trail Blazers beat the Denver Nuggets 97-90 to tie their Western Conference semi-finals at one game apiece.
Calling the night "bow-tie Wednesday", the third seeds held off a late rally from the second seeds, who were five points behind with 34 seconds left on the clock.
The National Basketball Association play-off series now transitions to Portland, with Game 3 today.
Guard C.J. McCollum led all scorers with 20 points and, while All-Star guard Damian Lillard had a relatively quiet night with 14 points, double-digit contributions from four other Blazers helped them get over the line.
Afterwards, Stotts, who wore a bow tie on the sidelines, revealed it was to show solidarity with Yim and claimed that "bow ties are undefeated this year".
He also hailed how his players were "a lot better offensively" than in Game 1, saying: "I really liked our approach in the first half, particularly the first quarter. We did a better job on the ball. I liked the tone we set for most of the game."
However, he also admitted the Blazers had been too lax in guarding All-Star centre Nikola Jovic, who paced Denver with 16 points and pulled down 14 rebounds, especially in the final quarter. He said his team "were very fortunate that we weren't hurt as badly as we could have been".
His opposite number was equally unhappy after contrasting halves, with the Nuggets initially struggling to match Portland's physical approach, before raising their game after the interval.
Coach Michael Malone added: "In that first half, they were the aggressor... I'm extremely proud of the way my players came back in the second half.
"But we've got to do it for 48 minutes and that was the most disappointing thing about tonight."

Football: Guardiola defends Man City's youth record following Diaz departure

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has defended his side's youth development record after academy graduate Brahim Diaz left for Real Madrid, saying he only wants to work with players who are committed to the club.
The 19-year-old Diaz completed a move to the Spanish capital on Monday, following in the footsteps of English winger Jadon Sancho, who left City in 2017 for Borussia Dortmund to make a huge impact in the German Bundesliga.
City failed to keep both players at the Etihad Stadium due to a lack of first-team opportunities but Guardiola said youngsters must be patient if they are to make a breakthrough at any of the Europe's elite clubs.
"They win the opportunity (to play) on the field but you have to take a look at all the big clubs in Europe how many young players are in the first team," Guardiola told a news conference ahead of City's League Cup semi-final first-leg against Burton Albion on Wednesday (Jan 9).
"The young players need time. David Silva, for example, was loaned to others before he became what he is right now, before he came us. Some have patience, some trust what the club want to do, and some don't."
England under-21 playmaker Phil Foden committed his long-term future to City last month, having received a public backing from Guardiola this season.
"Like I said many times, I don't want people that don't want to stay here," the Spanish coach added.
"We did with Brahim everything we have done with Phil (Foden) and with Jadon - important players and we did absolutely everything. The only one who decides to stay is Phil."

Foden is set to feature against Burton with Guardiola having almost his full squad available to cope with the demands of the Premier League and domestic cup competitions this month.
Guardiola said French full back Benjamin Mendy, who is on the sidelines with a knee injury, could return to first-team action in two-to-three weeks.
"He's training alone," Guardiola added.
"Two weeks, three weeks maybe (until he returns). Everybody else is fit."
City will return to league action against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday as they continue to chase Liverpool, who are four points clear at the top of the table.

Football: Messi increases goal haul as Barca draw 2-2 with Eibar

EIBAR, SPAIN (REUTERS) - Barcelona captain and La Liga top scorer Lionel Messi rounded off a spectacular season by netting twice in a 2-2 draw away to Eibar in the champions’ final game on Sunday (May 19), taking his tally to a remarkable 36 league goals.
Eibar went ahead in the 20th minute with a strike from Barca’s on-loan midfielder Marc Cucurella which squirmed under keeper Jasper Cillessen but Messi levelled in the 31st after sneaking into the box to meet a pass from Arturo Vidal.
Messi struck again a minute later, racing through the middle unchallenged to latch on to a pass from Ivan Rakitic and calmly chip the outstretched keeper Marko Dmitrovic.
But Eibar’s Pablo de Blasis levelled right before halftime with a superb one-touch strike from long range after the ball fell into his path following a desperate header away from Cillessen, who looked in shaky form ahead of next week’s Copa del Rey final against Valencia.
“When you have nothing at stake you are always less keen in a game, in the end we drew but I think we have ended the season well,” said Barca coach Ernesto Valverde.
“We have been champions for a while now, we were very consistent throughout the campaign. We had a few difficulties early in the season, but we overcame them.” Malcom and Gerard Pique missed second-half chances for the champions while Cucurella spurned an even better opportunity to snatch a winner for Eibar, who have still never managed to beat Barca in the top flight.
Messi had a difficult chance to score again and complete a hat-trick but sent his shot well over the bar.
The Argentine still finished the campaign as La Liga’s top scorer for a third year in a row, the first player to do so since Hugo Sanchez of Real Madrid in 1987.
He also joined the late former Athletic Bilbao striker Telmo Zarra as the only players in the league’s history to be top scorer six times.
Messi scored 15 goals more than his nearest challengers, Barca team mate Luis Suarez and Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema who both netted 21 times.
Barca, who clinched an eighth title in 11 seasons with three games to spare, finished the campaign on 87 points, 11 clear of runners-up Atletico Madrid and 19 ahead of Real Madrid in third.
Their focus now turns to beating Valencia in next week’s Cup final in Seville to complete a second consecutive domestic double.
Their season, however, is still likely to be overshadowed by their Champions League semi-final elimination to Liverpool.
